Best Pizza and Burgers of the Summer

He makes a really good "pretendwich" :)

We've been using our grill and staying outdoors as much as possible lately and I love it.  I'm a huge fan of no dishes and paper plate dinners at the patio table. Last night we made an award winning dinner, I did the prep work, Lucas did the grilling. We earned bragging rights to the best hamburger ever. You'll never guess it's two secret ingredients. I picked up the recipe from an old Taste Of Home magazine as we were cleaning out junk drawers and bookcases.

If burgers aren't your thing, I used one of the ingredients in the second recipe for a oven baked pizza. It's to die for and is just as tasty but with less calories!

best burger, hawaiian burger, pineapple hamburger

Hawaiin Burgers

Drain 8oz can of Crushed Pinapples, reserving 1/2 cup of the juice. Dump crushed pineapples into a large bowl with 1 Green Onion chopped, 1 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce, and 1/2 tsp. each of Salt, Garlic Salt, Pepper. Mix these ingredients together then add 1 lb. Ground Beef or Ground Turkey and 1/2 lb Spicy Pork Sausage. Make your patties and grill them to your liking. Mix the reserved pineapple juice with ketchup for a special condiment. Serve burgers on Hawaiin Sweet rolls.

I can promise you the men will love this burger. My husband went bat crazy over it. Honestly, I've never seen him get this excited about food ever before. I promise you, this is the trick to a mouth watering burger. Make extras because you'll want seconds!

Hawaiian Pizza, Barbecue and Pineapple Pizza, Pineapple Chicken and Barbecue Pizza

Hawaiin Barbecue Pizza

Choose your "Flat Out" Thin Crust Flat Bread for the pizza crust. If you haven't heard of these yet, click the link and buy them on your next shopping trip, they are healthy and super tasty! Lay your flat bread on a cookie sheet and spread a layer of your favorite Barbecue Sauce. Then layer on the toppings.... cubed pineapple, cooked/cut chicken, and spinach. Shred Mozzarella Cheese and Gorgonzola Cheese over top. Place in 350 degree oven for 8 minutes!

I had to share these recipes with you, they're both SO good and include a summer time favorite of mine... Pineapples! Plus it reminds me of our days in Hawaii, when grilling and eating on the patio was a year round thing and pineapples were put on almost everything!

So you pick your fave! I'd love to know if you give either a try!
These are both winning recipes and go great with a cold one :)

Happy grilling, happy summertime cookouts!

A HOOAH, farewell to this challenge but definitely not an excuse to stop drinking spinach! I say keep it up! I know my family and I will continue to add greens to our smoothies. I seriously had no idea that the taste would be masked so well by fruit. Both my boys are getting servings of veggies and hardly noticing it. Making momma happy. Hubs is still a bit weary of the whole idea but he's coming around. And me.... I'm hooked! I'll never make another smoothie without at least adding a handful of spinach  :)

What about you?
Have you tried new ingredients? Bought new "superfoods"?
Do you think you'll continue with daily/weekly green smoothies?

Party Time - Green Smoothie

It's the 7th and final day of our Green Smoothie Challenge!
Katherine, Ashlee, Sally, Jezz, Hope and I all hope you've had fun getting your green on!
Tomorrow is the final link up. Have you looked over Wednesday and Fridays? I'm so tempted to try every green smoothie creation! Each time I make one of these green smoothies I'm still expecting to taste the green and just doesn't happen. Maybe because I overload the blender with every fruit in the house or maybe it's just meant to be. But I'm loving the fact that my smoothies now offer a pow of both veggies and fruits.

Party Time Green Smoothie

for the first smoothie...                          for the second smoothie...
handfuls of spinach                                 cup of sliced strawberries
handful of kale                                           cup of blueberries and blackberries
cup of frozen pineapple                         sliced kiwi
sliced frozen banana                               mango greek yogurt
mango                                                          5 spinach icecubes
1/4 cup Coconut Milk                            1/4 cup Coconut Milk

Blend each smoothie separately then combine! This makes plenty so expect leftovers!
party smoothie, party time smoothie, green smoothie recipe

We had fun with this colorful smoothie. It's like a little party in a cup! My little one and I played with layering the veggie and fruit goodness into our glasses. His being a plastic Mickey Mouse tumbler :) We made more than enough and used the leftovers for popsicles! Those will be the perfect bedtime treat for little man tonight. He really does get all kinds of excited when it's time to make a smoothie. He grabs his step stool and gets himself up to the counter ready to press the button on the blender. He imitates the sounds he hears and when it's ready he hops down, cup in hands and literally jumps up and down squealing for his fill up. It's really too cute and makes me happy that he's as excited about a green smoothie as he is over a new truck or handful of M&M's.

Come back Monday for the final link up!
Share a recipe and your thoughts on the challenge on with us. Has it become a habit for you?
Something you will continue? Did you learn of new ingredients or shelf items to help make your smoothies even more nutritious/yummy?

Apple A Day - Green Smoothie Recipe & Giveaway!

Today's the kickoff!
Green Smoothie Challenge - Day 1
In case you forgot or are seeing this for the first time, all you have to do is add one green smoothie to your day for 7 days. That's it! How easy right?! Here's a look at my first ever green smoothie....

green smoothie recipe with apples and fruit
We love apples in this house. My little one will carry an apple around like most tots do their paci. He'll stay busy on that apple all day. It's quite the babysitter. Apples are a staple, a must have in my house!

The first time I put apples in the blender was for this salad dressing and I remember thinking, well this is weird. But that salad dressing went down as one of my absolute faves. So for my first green smoothie I wanted to try mixing apples in with other fruits and handfuls of spinach.

Like apples, everyone in the fam wants a sip of my smoothie. I always make enough for at least 2 glasses and if I'm really being generous with MY smoothie then an entire blender full will make about 3 glasses. I tell you this because if you too make enough to share then you really need to double up on the greens to reep all the benefits of a green smoothie.

Apple a Day - Green Smoothie Recipe

1/2 c. almond milk
2 c. chopped spinach
1 fugi apple sliced/cubed
1 c. frozen pineapple chunks
1 c. frozen strawberry slices
*measurements are close estimates, I really just chop and dump!

apple a day green smoothie recipe and picture
So my first Green Smoothie wasn't actually the color green?! Keep that in mind, not all green smoothies are green. If you're adding blueberries or tons of strawberries or not using enough spinach/other green then the color will vary :)

Aside from the stems, I LOVED it!
I promise you, you can't taste the spinach!

Stealing a few tips from my Makings of a Green Smoothie post.... pour milk into blender first then add spinach, followed by fruits. It's important to put milk or creamy fruits in first so the blades/motor can work efficiently. My first green smoothie held a few stems, I realized that breaking the spinach leaves into pieces before adding to blender would help my smoothies be more smooth and stem free. Freezing my fruits the night before is really helpful too. Every smoothie needs something frozen otherwise you just get juice. Another fun trick for something frozen is making spinach ice cubes! Do this by placing spinach leaves in an ice cube tray and adding water. Tossing 5 or so into an otherwise unfrozen smoothie recipe will help you get the right consistency.

Also check out my Banana and Oat Post Workout Green Smoothie, it's my favorite!

The Making of a Green Smoothie

Tomorrow starts the Green Smoothie Challenge!
It's really easy, just add one green smoothie to your day for 7 days :)

How to make a Green Smoothie
pour your chosen liquid into blender first (I use almond milk)
add handfuls of chopped green (spinach, kale, parsley, collard, etc)
add chopped fruit (be creative, use your favorites)
add ice (or spinach ice cubes)
blend and enjoy!

It really is that easy and a green smoothie hardly taste any different than a regular smoothie.

Guarantee the right texture
you need something frozen in your recipe!
make spinach ice cubes
freeze chopped fruit
freeze yogurt
chop greens by hand or knife before adding to blender
pretty much always add a banana

So, why add a green smoothie to your day?
It's what the cool kids are doing! And, it's an easy and yummy way to add nutrition to your every day!
Your smoothie is completely custom to your liking. For example, if it's post workout - I add protein powder and a spoonful of L-glutamine powder. If I'm rushed for work I use milk, spinach icecubes, pineapple, strawberry and banana. If you want more of a detox kind use dandelion leaves, if you feel sick add ginger, honey, orange juice. It's whatever you're in the mood for or whatever you think your body needs.

Katherine who created this challenge for us has done it before, her blog is packed with info and recipes, not to mention some gorgeous photo's! And of course you can count on me to post recipes throughout the week and you should absolutely check out these girls for more!

Balls of Energy! A No-Bake Recipe for you...

I'm always looking for a great new recipe. When I find one that boast only one dish and doesn't require stove top or oven time, I know I've struck gold. What makes a recipe like this even better? A boost of energy!

Let me introduce you to Kim :)
Kim blogs at Diary of a Jewell and while her blog is filled with all sorts of tips and tricks, I die for each one of her recipes. I'm excited to have her here sharing a recipe that requires no baking, one dish and gives a HUGE boost of energy! Needless to say, it's a healthy one too!

Diary of a Jewell, Kim

I could not be more excited to be posting here on Heart Shaped Sweat!

I only recently started following Kristine’s blog but I kind of feel like we are already friends. We’ve never met (in real life) and she lives in another country, across the continent…that’s not weird right? In fact, I think it is completely normal and considering we both love the same things, I think the friendship is definitely warranted.

It is pretty obvious that I have pretty big shoes to fill today, so I wanted to create a recipe that not only fit well on Heart Shaped Sweat, but was also easy and really good for you. In the Fall I was using pumpkin in pretty much everything and I adapted a recipe to create these delicious, nutrient packed pumpkin energy balls. Now with Spring on the horizon, I have been craving something a bit sweeter, so I created another variation of these energy balls to include fruit. Not only did they turn out delicious, I think these energy balls fit right into Kristine’s busy lifestyle, and hopefully they will find a place in yours too!Enjoy!
Cranberry Orange and Almond Energy Balls

Cranberry, Orange & Almond Energy Balls

Yields about 20 Balls

Ingredients
¼ Cup Rolled Oats
¼ Cup Protein Powder (I use vanilla)
¼ Cup Almond Flour
¼ Cup Dates
½ Cup Almond Butter
½ Cup Craisins (Dried Cranberries)
4 Tablespoons of Orange Juice
4 Tablespoons Agave Syrup
½ Cup Coconut – for rolling (optional)

Instructions
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Add all of the ingredients, except the coconut to the food processor.
snacks for energy

Pulse until the items are well combined.
If you find your mixture is too thick add more orange juice until it is the desired consistency.

snacks for energy

Portion and roll into individual balls.
I like to use a small cookie scoop, but a table spoon will work just as well. The mixture will be very sticky (which is why I choose to roll in coconut). Don’t be concerned, the balls will set in the fridge.
snacks for energy

Roll in coconut and set on the cookie sheet. Refrigerate overnight (or at least 8 hours) this will allow the balls to set and all of the flavors to combine.

These will keep in the fridge for about 2 weeks but will last as long as 3 months in the freezer. I like to keep about 10 out and then freeze the rest. You can take them out as you need them, they thaw quite quickly and are the perfect snack to grab when you're on the go!

**********************************************************************************************

ummmmm, isn't she great! Little balls of energy in a NO BAKE recipe! That's the best of both worlds!
I'm eager to give this recipe a try, I'm sure you are too. She couldn't be more right, this fits right into my busy lifestyle. I'll definitely be adding this to my list of healthy snacks!

Be sure to stop by Kims blog and say hello!
If you've enjoyed this recipe let her know!

Chew on This

*note...this may not make much sense to you until you read my Food for Thought post. It was my most shared post, created countless conversations and spurred many to join in the cleanse with me! It's also where you will find the exact cleanse I followed.

We all know what healthy eating means. Sure, there are questions about chai seeds, sprinkle flax seed where and omega who??? But generally speaking we have an understanding for how to eat healthy. We're taught from weeee ages the main food groups by reference of a not.so.fancy triangle visual, emphasizing the importance of eating fruits and vegetables at an abundance. So, while knowledge is power in the realm of all things, healthy eating becomes successful more often by motivation and understanding our own bodies. Each of which is different for everyone. It is important to feel in control of our eating habits instead of feeling like our cravings control us. To conquer this, we must be motivated by something and we must have understanding and respect for how our bodies react to food.  I found motivation in the last bite of my second batch of cookies. I found motivation in the uneasy feeling in my favorite pair of jeans. Motivation comes from a desire to be better. A desire to reach a standard set by oneself. Be careful not to gain motivation solely after what others have, that my friends is pseudo. I thought I understood foods pretty well but I came out of this cleanse with a few ah-ha moments that helped me understand so much more.

review of the eat your heart out cleanse, tips for cleansing
The cleanse I chose worked wonders for me and my family. Considering how many have already asked, yes, we did loose weight. Lucas and I both lost 7 pounds. But again, we weren't in it for the weight loss. And I promise you, you will most likely gain back any weight lost as soon as you return starchy, white foods to your diet. At least I did. In just 4 days, I gained back half the weight lost. This cleanse eliminates all grains, bread, pasta, nuts, cheese, and shelf life snacks, pretty much anything starchy or loaded with carbs. When balancing your diet between all food groups, your body will find it's happy weight. I know my number is not less than 7 pounds. The next popular question involved applying this cleanse to a paleo diet. Yes, absolutely. Once you hit day 4, the paleo diet would require you to use soy based products. It's surprising how many appetizing products have been made for those to consume without taking from animals.

tips for eat your heart out cleanse, tips for doing a cleanse

basically eat the rainbow and eat as much as you want. The night before wash and cut all purchased fruit.
Prep baggies and containers for the entire day so you can grab and go each of your snacks and meals. Think convenience. You will feel hungry as this is the first day of the cleanse and while fruit offers loads of nutrition and hydration, the calorie count is relatively low leaving you with constant reminders of an empty stomach. Get creative. Try spices and seasonings such as nutmeg and cinnamon to kick up the flavor in simple fruits like peaches. For dinner consider spaghetti squash. We found spaghetti squash to be rather satisfying. It's an easy meal, ready in an hour. Omit any and all sauces for this "spaghetti" instead use a dash of salt and pepper. If cooked just right (which is easy) spaghetti squash offers a sweet taste and nice change to the many little bites you've had all day. We used this recipe. Shoveling fork lifts fulls of spaghetti squash weighed us down enough to fall asleep without any nagging hunger pains. (banana's and tomatoes are not allowed this day, zucchini and squash are indeed fruits)

vegetable cleanse

Pig out on celery, carrots, spicy cucumbers (we used this recipe), pickles, asparagus, bell peppers, and salads w/ the smallest amount of dressing. Again, prep for convenience. It's an understatement to simply say you'll be ready for dinner by 10am. Holy melon balls, I was hungry, almost felt delusional. We chose stir fry for dinner and the pan did not heat up fast enough. Munching on edamame while dinner simmered made life better. Once served, we practically grabbed fistfuls to fill up our seemingly empty stomachs. We do stir fry often but didn't miss the regular heaps of lo mein or rice. Overloading the stir fry with a huge head of sliced cabbage was an excellent substitution. The one allowed starch of the week was included in tonight's dinner. A potato. The best potato I've ever had. And it was served PLAIN. We noticed achy, crampy muscles from our workouts today. (obvious result of slashing food groups and calories)

fruit and vegetable cleanse

You will enjoy the ease of this day. After two days of only having one type of food to pick from, this day feels much more "buffet like". You think I'm kidding? no way. We had salads for lunch, this time using a warmed avocado for the dressing.  Having the choice between fruits and veggies teaches you a valuable lesson. You will learn in this day what foods can replace your junk food cravings. For dinner we snacked on edamame (we love those things!) and repeated the spaghetti squash with a side of snap peas, green beans and mushrooms all sauteed with garlic//onion. Yum! It really is quite amusing that a dinner like this was so satisfying.  I would have never made this for the family but now we've enjoyed it twice in one week. Do I think we should go vegan or vegetarian?  Heck no, I went to sleep dreaming of day 5.

This was hell for me. I knew it would be. Hubs suffered hanger back on day 1 and today it hit me hard. Banana's hold 100 calories. Most greek yogurts boast servings of only 100 calories. Considering you have an entire day to share 8 of each, it feels as though you're running on fumes. After my crappy morning workout, I felt wiped out. My body simply did not have it's usual calories and fuel to keep me going. I literally performed at only half my typical level. An hour later, I kid you not, I still couldn't bend over without feeling dizzy//lightheaded. The frozen yogurt I had planned for dinner hour was immediately consumed. I wrestled with the idea of making a huge sandwich but instead threw two banana's in the freezer and stuck to the rules. Once the banana's were frozen I sliced them, dumping them into the blender with a cup of yogurt. I gulped that smoothie like a slurpee on a hot summer day. Then cursed the 8 banana rule, took a deep breath and reminded myself, it's only one day. We went to bed early on this day. Like really early. (you may swap the yogurt for skim milk)

cleanse, chicken and tomato dinner

Finally, some meat! And you know what we chose? Rotisserie. yes, rotisserie chicken. Considering we had been eating our hearts out on all things fruit and veggie, the chicken seemed like a gift from above but it actually made us both feel the way you feel after Thanksgiving dinner, full and bursting at the seams. Perhaps this cleanse gave us a bit of insight on better portion control. opps! Your body can easily tolerate fruit and veggies in abundance but meat is another story. Your body will also tell you when it's hungry, something we don't often get the notion of due to senseless snacking and munching. Eating 8 tomatoes in one day is a hard rule to follow. It's recommended that you drink a glass of water with each tomato to reduce reactions with their high acid content. The chicken may be exchanged for turkey. Obvi, lunch meat is not recommended. (P.S. I hate tomatoes, aside from seasonings, this is all in all a boring food day)

cleanse, chicken and vegetable stir fry

At this point, the newness has worn off, old habits//new habits are in place. Those who "juice" can easily start any veggie day with a tall glass. We don't, so we ate on chicken. I'm sorry, do you know a way to eat chicken or cook veggies for breakfast minus the hollandaise sauce? I sure don't, nothing appetizing about starting a day this way. By now you've had enough time to remind yourself that healthy eating is yummy, however the challenge is for 7 days. We had promised ourselves to stick it out til the end. I went on my morning run, dog and kid in tow, and came back full blown "rangry". I scurried to the kitchen, locking tot in highchair, and got to cooking. Veggie and chicken stir fry was ready in 15 minutes flat. Kale chips made for a nice afternoon snack. Later that evening, we found plenty of vegetables and chicken at our friends housewarming party. I'm still impressed with hubs commitment to the cleanse, it does not allow alcohol and that man loves a cold beer, especially on nights out. Speaking of, water only for these 7 days!

miracle soup, eat your heart out cleanse

This soup consists of....nothing. It's runny and smelly and I believe that's what it intends to make of you. Before agreeing to this cleanse I scoured the reviews and read that if you dislike the Miracle soup, repeating day 6 was recommended. After the first spoonful of soup, which even the dog turned a nose to, we chose to drain most the liquid from the soup and eat it as a side to chicken left over from day 6. I also allowed myself fruit. Now, if you're in this to drop some LB's then yes, you should do the soup. I'm pretty certain you would find yourself reading magazines and draining your cell phone battery in the smallest room of the house, all day long. If you are dedicated to this cleanse for the pure reasoning of gaining back a healthier lifestyle then I see no wrong in combining all the days into this one.

tips for cleansing, detox cleanse, weight loss cleanse,

Best advice for this cleanse?

plan ahead, shop ahead, make it convenient and plentiful.
Success is in preparing snacks//meals the night before and making sure you have plenty to pick from.
Be ready to chop and cook. Use seasonings, think outside of the box.
Do see food as a reward during this cleanse and journal your cravings, if you want.
Focus on your goals, your reasons for doing this.

Are you hungry during a cleanse?

yes. is it bearable? absolutely.
could guzzling water take away hunger? yes.
Validating the idea that sometimes we confuse hunger with thirst.

Tips from me to you when cleansing....

-do not I repeat, do not go into a grocery sore. It is a brutal experience.
cans, loafs, and cartons will be talking evil smack to you.
-do not open your cabinets//pantry unless you know exactly what you are going in there for.
cans of tuna will look very appetizing. animal crackers will suddenly entice you.
-do not enter a Walmart or a Walmart parking lot.
rage will enter your bones like never before. you're guaranteed to cross paths with every living idiot.
-do not expect the same level of "can do" in your fitness routines.
it just isn't so. due to low amount of fuel you will need to adjust your routine to your bodies reaction.
-do not praise the heavens if your scale shows you a number you haven't seen in months//years.
weight loss can be temporary. only permanent decisions towards healthy living will deliver permanent weight loss. as some of you commented in this post, a cleanse is only a quick fix to unwanted pounds.

Want to try it? Within these 7 days, I promise you will appreciate food in a different way. You will appreciate the ability to eat as much as you'd like without any guilt or heavy gut. You will appreciate the benefits of eating foods that come box free, bag free. Choosing raw and fresh and cooking with, is a challenge to incorporate into your daily living but it's a rewarding one. Eliminating the idea that everything must be dipped, everything must be wrapped in bread or that bread must be drenched in condiments is a healthier way of being and not as hard as once thought. If you're in a rut, considering a healthier lifestyle,  then yes this cleanse//diet//fast//detox (whatever you call it) is a healthy option for breaking free.

Trying a cleanse for the first time, at a 7 day span was the change I needed. I focused on the good, I focused on my reasons for doing this and not all the "can't haves". I made it through the 7 days and was successful. Success is measured differently for each person. There isn't always some universal spectrum of "you did it and you failed". Each one of us sets our own standards which sets our own spectrum of success. You may not want to reset all of your eating habits. You may just want to loose weight the quick, healthy way.
This cleanse will help you achieve either goal in mind.

Woot! Woot! You made it to the end!!!
:) Thank you for all your support & interest!

Food for Thought...

I have a sweet tooth. I have a hankering for all salty foods. When I'm stressed or feeling like one of life's puzzle pieces are out of place those cravings come into full effect. So before I get completely lost in the next batch of cookies, box of twizzlers or plate of nachos I am diving head first into a 7 day cleanse.

No, people I am not saying I want to spend the next 7 days stuck in the smallest room of the house. I mean "cleanse" in more of a mental way. I need to cleanse my mind and my taste buds of all things I know better than to indulge in. Typically I eat with the 80/20 ratio in mind. Making majority of my food choices healthy and unprocessed. The other smidgen is open to sweet treats and salty findings.
It's a smart ratio, one that keeps things in balance.

apples and oranges, cleanse, healthy eating

Until I get stressed. I get into a cycle of all or none. I may hit the drive-thru instead of the salad cafe. And not just one day of the week but like 3 days of the week. I might, might just pull up to the speaker and decide to order a salad but then I add the chocolate milkshake and say yes to the 3 cookies for 99 cents. Another way my eating habits change when under stress...is in the other extreme direction. I will keep myself so busy that I completely forget to stop and eat. There are days upon days that I settle back into the home with my family and realize while cooking dinner that I hadn't eaten at all during the day. By the time I sit to eat dinner I am famished and irritable. After eating dinner I feel icky and exhausted. My body is screaming at me for treating it that way.

So what do you call this? Is it considered emotional eating? We hear a lot about emotional eating. It is a problem for many people. Cookie dough and a chic flick is the classic combo for the night after a major breakup. But so is chips and salsa with fishbowl margaritas and a circle of girlfriends. The scenarios of mindless eating when under stress are endless. Can you relate to any of this?

Then we have the days of a "busy bee" attitude when there is no time for food.  You fill your days with so many activities that you've completely forgotten to eat. By bedtime "hangry" has taken over, fatigue has set in and no matter what foods you choose to chew and swallow your body doesn't have the time to truly benefit from any nutritional value it may have held. Anyone recognize with this?

I am guilty of both! And, I guess that's OK. So long as the desire to get back on track is present.
We're human. Life isn't perfect. And nachos and chocolate cake are so damn good.
I believe we're gonna fault. we're going to struggle. we will make bad decisions based on the fact/confusion that we do deserve to enjoy all the yumminess in the kitchen, at the restaurant, the bakery...
So what happens when this isn't just a slip up? When we find bad patterns in our choices?

vegetables, veggie cuts, food prep, healthy eating

For me it means I start to lag. I start to feel frustrated. I even decrease my gym time. And if I choose to run my day with a "busy bee" attitude and not stop to eat 'til the kids are in bed....I hit the same wall of frustration and slacking off.

The body can only function properly when it's fed properly. Managing stress becomes even more difficult when turning to poor food choices. People who live strict lifestyles of only unprocessed foods literally become sick to their stomachs after making a bad food choice. A vegetarian wouldn't dare dig a fork into a piece of meat, not just because of their values but also because their body will react negatively as if meat were bad for it. These lifestyles, commitments, and values start somewhere. We each want something better for ourselves. We each have goals. Mine is to stay smart with my food choices and overhaul when I eff up too much.

fruits, fruit display, whole foods, healthy eating, cleanse

The mind can only stay strong when it's given the chance to. If you're in a bad cycle of eating all the wrong foods, are stuck in a rut filled with cravings for all things fried, salty and sweet you may want to consider a whole food type of cleanse. If you're dodging meal times and stuffing face at a later hour then thou should, you may want to re-introduce yourself to the healthy food groups and remind yourself of the natural energy given by foods that will help you "do it all".

Notice I'm not promoting weight loss? Weight loss shouldn't be the sole reason for eating healthy. Correcting your eating habits and improving upon them shouldn't be driven by a need to loose weight but by a need to live better. Loosing weight is an important goal. I've had that goal. I respect, support, motivate, and encourage anyone's goal to loose weight. But, the goal of loosing weight may not be enough to sustain the important decision of healthy eating. We must want to eat healthy. We should want to understand what fuels the body and what breaks it down. Understanding the body's system, it's reactions to all things good and bad is a much more convicting notion for such a commitment.

Our bodies are little machines. They are all we have to support our dreams.
We deserve. our families and friends deserve. one that runs well.

I choose this cleanse strictly because it has no fluff. It's primary focus is indulgent in all healthy food groups, each to regulate the mind and body. I doubted my decision with this particular cleanse quite a few times. I'd put it on back burner and read up on other cleanses. But I always came back to this. I would rather avoid special concocted drinks and baggies of pills. I would prefer to purchase my cleanse at an actual grocery store. Now this is just me. Just my feelings. I believe in the benefits available through many of the cleanses being advertised right now. But for me and my situation a cleanse that actually focused on food was exactly what I needed to regroup and kill off the sweet, salty, and greasy cravings. The vast popularity of this cleanse  also created doubts, the "too good, to be true" kind of doubts. But again, I am not cleansing in an effort to loose weight. I simply want to dive head first into the apple cart and remind myself of how delicious healthy eating really is. There are 1,000's of reviews on this cleanse. A cleanse that offers you that level of information should be given some heavy thought.

fruit snack, cleanse, healthy eating, healthy snacks

All in all this 7 day plan is a no-brainer. I mean, really. You spend a day on each food group. You eat yourself silly into all fruits one day, veggies the next. And just when you can't pick up another piece of celery...you get to spend the next day choosing between fruits and veggies. The forth day seems a bit like hell. It's an odd day to me. I would have liked to of seen more dairy options, more protein. Days 5, 6, and 7 pretty much allow all healthy foods. It does however restrict you from red meats. The system is set to allow your tract to more easily digest the current days food so it can better work on all the junk you've shoveled in, just days//weeks before. This cleanse (as I found) forces you to think outside of the box. You can only eat so many cut up chunks of fruit or slices of veggies. You must dig a little deeper to  create more satisfying meals from what options you have that day. End result? Sure you may loose a few pounds but you will gain an incredible, strong backbone for warding off nasty cravings. You will give new foods a try out of pure desperation to cure the hunger pang. Most likely you'll realize that eating healthy isn't all hard or boring.

If you find any of this cool....follow my  random tweets or pics on IG. At the end of these 7 days I'll do a total recap. I hope to change just one persons outlook. I hope to encourage just one person away from the vending machine and to their lunchbox of clean eats. And of course, I hope to curb my cravings and learn what other items I could be stocking the fridge and cabinets with, in my home for me and my 3 L's.

Wish us luck!!!
And tell me your thoughts, pretty please!!!
Have you considered a cleanse? emotional eating?

Be Bigger Than The Day You're Living In

First off....
Favorite part of the Grammy Awards ----> Carrie Underwood!!
Do you think she gets chill bumps when she sings? Is it possible to give yourself chill bumps?! The woman is amazingly beautiful and the power packed in her vocals is unbelievable! Amazing. Loved it.
Did you like the way they lit up her dress? What was your favorite part of the Grammy's?

Ok, now back to the scheduled post.....

live life, set goals, have happy days

I've shared this quote with many, I feel it's words are powerful and motivating, I adore it and live by it...
We must always have something in mind that's bigger than the day we're living in....

Setting goals for yourself can be exciting but for some it may cause anxiety.
When setting your goals always be realistic. When being realistic always realize there will be times your goals must be re-evaluated. Life never fails at handing us curve balls. There will be times you doubt your abilities, or you doubt your successes. Remember, everyone starts and ends at a different level, cater your goals accordingly. And be sure to give yourself rewards along the way. Also, give yourself the satisfaction of achieving mini goals within your big goal. Mini goals will guarantee your success.

Spinning off of this....into maintaining a healthy and fit lifestyle! oh yes, it's happening, time now!
I feel, you must look at these three things....

Before setting your fitness goals take the time to evaluate where you are within the realm of fitness. Are you coming off a year hiatus? Have you had a recent setback keeping you from your routine? Do you have previous injuries to be considered? Once you are comfortable and honest with your current position - look ahead, way ahead - to where you want to be with your personal fitness level and make that your overall goal. Now that the big picture is drawn up lets map the route to include mini goals...these will be like markers, giving you satisfaction and encouragement to keep going. Your first mini goal could be just overcoming a fear of the gym. Another mini goal could be managing a distance equal to a 5K and then moving on to a 10K, eventually hitting a half marathon.  Short term//mini goals can be as simple as pumping out 25 consecutive sit-ups or holding a 30 second plank with an overall goal of 50 sit-ups and 1 minute planks. One of the best ways to challenge yourself and reach your big goal is to simply 'be more than you were yesterday'. It's that easy. It's worked for me, every time. Bringing out the inner competitor we all own is a driving force to keep us on track to our main goals.

I've said it before, the word diet bothers me. I fear it's use because often times it means "slashing certain foods". I don't mean "diet" in this sense. I say diet, because that's what it is...an overall consumption of foods you choose. Your diet is going to dictate how you feel and what you can do. The rule of thumb is simple...Eat Good, Look Good. Your diet must complement your fitness goals. Think about the time you spend finding the perfect earrings, scarf and purse for a certain outfit...now apply that same principal to your diet, it will complement your fitness goals. Again, mini goals will help you get to the big goal. If you wish to loose 25 pounds by bikini season, set mini goals of 4 pounds per month. Sound attainable? It is. Your diet is the finishing touch on your fitness level, or vice versa, however you see it best. Set mini goals such as shopping from only the perimeter of the grocery store, eating out only once a week, making sure your snacks are healthy choices, always having breakfast, adding more fiber through beans, greens, and wheat, having a daily salad, and setting aside time to make healthy meals. These suggested mini goals will help you find rewards along the route to your personalized diet goal and set you up for healthy habits.

Take a look in the mirror. Now what do you hear? Yes, not see but hear. Are there cries of doubt? The mirror should shout beautiful, encouraging words but many hear just the opposite and this dooms us for failure. Set a goal to applaud yourself when you stand before the mirror. Instead of letting your eyes roll to the subject of annoyance let your eyes meet and say, "Yes, I do approve". Hearing yourself in the mirror will help you find the "self" in self-image and your potential. And, focusing on the good will reinforce the beauty in your image. The more aware you are of the beauty you hold, the more value you carry. And the more valuable you are to yourself, the more capable you are of mighty things and achieving your goals (big and small). Being self aware and self confident brings out a force that is hard to defeat. By inserting this goal of healthy self-image you will get the best out of a healthy, fit lifestyle....looks and performance.

Are you overwhelmed by goals you've set for yourself?
Or maybe you need to set a few more, change things up?

I have goals set within my path to being  fit. I have goals for healthy eating/living. Goals within parenting and in my workplace too. Shooooot, I've even made goals for this blog. I search for my weakest link and sometimes the path I'm on receives dead ends or gets an unforeseen detour. It happens, it's part of life. Life changes and we have to change with it. The worst you can do is not set any goals.

And, don't forget to tell me what you thought of the Grammy's!

Whats On Your Salad #4

Have you had your salad today?
Salads are cool. Salads are crunchy. Salads are fun.

They're the perfect way to be sure of healthy eating. Salads are an option at practically every restaurant, as cheap as one buck-a-roo at the drive thru, and take less than 5 minutes to throw together in your own kitchen. They offer a bang of fiber and can satisfy one serving of fruits and veggies, add nuts, meats, or seafood for a boost of protein then pick the right dressing to pull it all together.

In last week's salad post I promised to share with you some easy home made dressing recipes.
Here's what you may have missed up to this point...

Thai Peanut Dressing - paired with slaw mix, every veggie in the fridge, and nuts
Sweet Asian Dressing - paired with Napa Cabbage, ramon, and almonds
Citrus Dressing - paired with spring lettuce, asparagus, red onion, and mandarins

home made salad dressing, chickpea salad, tahini salad dressing, salad recipe

Tahini Dressing - paired with spinach and chickpea

1/4 c. lemon juice
2 tbs red vinegar
pinch cayenne & salt
1 clove garlic
let sit 5-10 minutes then whisk in...
1/4 c. tahini
1/2 c. olive oil
1/2 shallot, thinly sliced

home made salad dressing, salad recipe, Orange Citrus Salad dressing

Orange Zest Dressing - paired with scallops and oranges on arugula

1/2 tbs sherry vinegar
1 tsp orange zest
1/2 shallot, thinly sliced
pinch of salt
let sit 5 - 10 minutes then whisk in....
1/2 c. olive oil

I recommend trying any one of these 5 dressings. It's too hard to pick a favorite, they are all seriously that good. Each one is healthy...a little olive oil does the body good. Home made dressings are easy to make and more tasty than store bought, since you can alter the ingredients to your own liking. You could even take the simple route of filling a jar with vinegar and infusing it with your favorite herbs like dill or cilantro or peppers and Italian seasonings. get creative!

Here's my favorite salad of the week....can't wait to see what you've been chomping on!!!

salad recipe, panera bread salad recipe, asian chicken salad recipe, home made asian sesame dressing
Mix chopped Romaine lettuce with grilled chicken breast slices. Add almond slivers and wonton crumbles. Sprinkle sesame seeds and cilantro on top! Brace yourself for a yum, yum salad, the cilantro adds a punch!

1/4 c. vinegar
1/4 c. toasted sesame oil
2 tbs soy sauce
1 tsp crushed red pepper
1 tsp sesame seed
